Founded in 1947, the team originally played in Minneapolis and was known as the Minneapolis Lakers before relocating to Los Angeles in 1960. The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in NBA history, known for their numerous championships and a storied legacy that includes many of basketball’s greatest players, such as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kobe Bryant. The team’s colors are purple, gold, and white, and they play their home games at the Staples Center, which they share with the Los Angeles Clippers. The franchise is celebrated for its flashy style of play, known as “Showtime,” particularly during the 1980s, and has a large fan base both locally and internationally.
